Part 2: The Courage of Personal Ownership
The Ownership Series
Personal ownership is different. This is about turning the lens inward and owning your thoughts, emotions, and reactions. You do not get to blame others for how you respond. That part is always yours.
Going back to the leadership story, I had to admit that my hesitation was not about protecting the team. It was about protecting myself. I did not want to deal with the fallout of losing a good leader. That was not his problem. That was mine. Personal ownership meant admitting that to myself.
In life, this is the harder path. It means admitting you are responsible for your bad moods, your outbursts, and your excuses. You cannot pin them on someone else. You cannot play the victim. Personal ownership means stepping up and saying, “this is mine.”
It takes courage to admit you are not in control of the world, only yourself. But the moment you start doing that, growth begins.
Takeaway: personal ownership means you are always responsible for your response.
Extra Credit: Think about a situation where you lacked personal ownership. Imagine the outcome if you hadn’t acted how you did.
